Irish-born actress Laura Flynn, known on stage as A.K.A. Flora Lynn, first fell in love with Montreal as a visiting student. “I spent 9 months living with a family in Joliette, (north-east of the city) learning French.” That summer, Flynn volunteered for what is now known as the Festival St-Ambroise Montreal FRINGE. Eleven years later, Flynn headlines at the festival, in her first solo performance entitled, “Get Your Shuffle On.” The play runs from June 7 to 18, at Montreal Improv Theatre.
Flynn, a vivacious writer/actress who regularly performs story-telling, improvisation and stand-up comedy, is delighted to present “Shuffle.” “I had the idea for the show for 2 years, but hadn’t the opportunity to develop it.” When she found out that she was selected by the FRINGE lottery this year, she knew “it was now or never.”
With the support and encouragement of director Marie-Hélène Côté, Flynn performs stories based on childhood characters, merging them into a series of vignettes centered on the theme of Escapism. “It’s a gradual process… there have been many changes along the way.” The collaboration between Flynn and Côté has been ideal. “Every practice is a joy!”
Flynn’s creations are sparked by her Irish heritage, along with childhood memories. “Shuffle” originates in “old-style entertainment—the kinds of programs I’d watch with my grandmother on television.” Flynn employs performance art, arts and crafts and song and dance, to bring those reminiscences to life. “There is a lot of nostalgia for me… As an only child, I used to escape into my imagination… It’s a personal story, but hopefully everyone will be able to connect to it.”
“Shuffle” captures the ambiance of classic game shows, by using themed playing cards, which are used to direct the audience. “My aim is to bring the audience into my world. Giving them a fun-filled interactive ride, exploring the absurd banality of human nature. Discovering the universal in the personal…”
Flynn’s expressive and buoyant nature lies at the heart of all her performances. “I’m really enjoying the process!” She has found Montreal to be an ideal city to realize her dreams. “The community here is so supportive; they always give great advice… I just think they’ve got your back.” Audiences are equally devoted to Flynn and her creations.
