Winter is a tough time to travel, but how about a hilarious trip to “Joketown”? While Montreal is known worldwide as the birthplace of “Just for Laughs” and has arguably the goofiest politics around, the real “Joketown” is an evening of comedy and surprises, celebrating its 16th edition at Theatre Sainte Catherine, on January 28. The monthly event, which debuted at TSC in August 2015, has been delighting sold out audiences, most notably at last year’s Montreal Sketchfest and Ladyfest Montreal. The stage productions, each unique and original, are co-produced by TSC’s Artistic Director Alain Mercieca and Associate Artistic Director of Montreal Improv Theatre, D.J. Mausner.

“Joketown” is described as “a daring and rapid-fire blend of sketch and improv comedy,” which brings together a rotating roster of the city’s top writers, actors, comedians, improv and sketch performers and artists. Together, they collaborate in the creation of a series of dynamic and original short comedy plays, over the course of four days. On the final day, the works are performed at Theatre Sainte Catherine. Through audience applause, a winner is selected, earning the victor the title of “Mayor of Joketown.” The Mayor is then invited to return the next month, to defend the prestigious honour.

This month’s “Joketown 16” features an impressive array of Montreal talent, including Mike Carrozza, Emery Fine, Alex Brown, Jason Grimmer, Allison Naturale, Travis Cannon, Deirdre Trudeau, Dimitri Kyres, Carmen Rose, Lise Vigneault and Serag Meletian. No passport necessary– come  and see what madcap metropolis this amazing lineup will produce!
