Check Out the Montreal Premiere of BUYER & CELLAR

THE ACCLAIMED COMEDY COMES TO TOWN FOR CANADA PRIDE!

Our very own Mobster Donald Rees will star in the Montreal premiere of BUYER & CELLAR, the Off-Broadway smash written by Jonathan Tolins. As part of Fierté Montréal, the show will bow this month at Théâtre Sainte-Catherine, so check it out on August 15, 17 or 18!

Struggling actor Alex More (META nominee Donald Rees) takes a job working in the Malibu basement of a beloved megastar. One day, the Lady Herself comes downstairs to play. It feels like real bonding in the basement, but will their relationship ever make it upstairs? BUYER & CELLAR is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things, and the oddest of odd jobs.

It seemed like a massive challenge,” Donald says about his introduction to the material, “especially because when I started this project, I knew nothing about Barbra Streisand. But luckily the main character in the story also knows nothing about her, which kind of makes it accessible for anyone else who doesn’t know her. You don’t need to know a lot about her to love the show.”

Regarding the show’s offbeat concept, Donald stresses that the mall under Streisand’s home actually exists. “Under her house,” he says, “she built a mall to put all of her stuff– and when you think about it, it’s really smart. There’s an antique clothes boutique that has all of her own dresses, but my favorite is the gift shop. She goes out and pre-buys these amazing gifts, puts them in the gift shop, and when she needs to go to someone’s house and bring something, she just goes down to the gift shop!”

Much of the show revolves around the friendship struck between the singer and Alex: “She comes down, and she sees a doll that she likes, so she starts haggling with him for the price of her own doll. It happens over several days, and she prints her own coupon for a discount. So it goes into that absurd, fun comedy.” Explaining that Buyer & Cellar sidesteps the overwrought melodrama of traditional one-man shows, Donald emphasizes that the show will be unconventional and fun. “To me, Pride is a celebration, and the show is a celebration as well. Have a drink while you’re watching it; let’s have a great time.”
