a collaboration between dance artists Hanako Hoshimi-Caines, Zoë Poluch, and artist-composer Elisa Harkins

On September 12, 13 & 14, 2022, MAI (Montréal, arts interculturels) presents Radio III / ᎦᏬᏂᏍᎩ ᏦᎢ the result of a first-time collaboration between Hanako Hoshimi-Caines, Zoë Poluch and Elisa Harkins. Part futuristic Indigenous concert and part beautifully disconcerting dance performance, this trio strives to give visibility to what has been obscured within colonial aesthetic systems.

Choreographed and performed by Hanako Hoshimi-Caines, Zoë Poluch, and Elisa Harkins, who bring together their different cultural backgrounds and artistic experiences, with music composed by Elisa Harkins, Radio III / ᎦᏬᏂᏍᎩ ᏦᎢ questions and challenges minimalism and aesthetic claims of neutrality in postmodern dance. The work combines disco and Indigenous languages in an effort to influence the fate of these endangered languages. Radio III / ᎦᏬᏂᏍᎩ ᏦᎢ features songs by Elisa Harkins, some in Cherokee and Muscogee (Creek).

Within Radio III / ᎦᏬᏂᏍᎩ ᏦᎢ there are many references to the number 3: there are 3 performers, the piece has 3 sections, and there are 3 duets, one being a triplet. Created and developed on the Muscogee Reservation in Oklahoma, in Stockholm, Sweden, and in Montréal, Québec, the piece brings together components and concerns that inform an interdisciplinary and counter-colonial approach to performance.
