This January- February, Teesri Dunya Theatre presents: Raul Varma’s play “Bhopal” at The Segal Center

The Segal Center For Performing Arts will be showcasing BHOPAL, a play that commemorates the 30th anniversary of one of the most infamous industrial disasters that the world has ever seen. The Bhopal disaster (also referred to as the “Bhopal Gas Tragedy”) was a gas leak that took place in Bhopal, India on the night December 2nd-3rd 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madya Pradesh. Over 500,000 people were exposed to “methyl isocyanate” gas, and other harmful toxins that damage the human body. This toxic substance managed to make it’s way in and around the shanty towns located near the plant and affect thousands upon thousands of people, young and elder, in a devastating way. Estimates had varied on the death toll as time progressed after the tragedy. Initially it was communicated to the public by the government of Madya Predesh who confirmed a death toll of 3,787 deaths related to gas release; but it wasn’t until 2006 when a government statement confirmed that the leak from the Bhopal tragedy had actually caused a staggering 558,125 injuries, 38, 478 temporary partial injuries and approximately 3,900 severely and permanently disabling injuries. This is truly a tragic event that took place in history that will be remembered by so many, including those who had to grieve the loss of family members and loved ones. One can not possibly comprehend the amount of destruction and harm done to a country that is already suffering economically without the ‘help’ of a gas leak.

This January- February, Teesri Dunya Theatre presents Raul Varma’s play “Bhopal” (directed by Liz Valdez) about a girl named Sonya Labonté, a Canadian doctor working in Bhopal, India. She is privy to incriminating evidence that a pesticide company is polluting the environment and causing major deformities in babies. In an attempt to save face, the Indian government uses intimidation tactics by threatening deportation to prevent Sonya from gaining justice for those who have been victimized by the carelessness of those involved.

Will she succeed, or give in to her fears? There’s only one way to discover how the story ends– you have to see the show! Be apart of this incredible journey as Liz Valdez’s fantastic directing encapsulates each and every emotion of the imprint that the Bhopal gas tragedy left in the wake of it’s destruction.
