Pitchfest is getting the city pumped for soccer season

Summer is finally upon us, folks. With it, comes tournament season for the World’s favourite sport. That’s right, I’m talking about football, calcio, soccer, whatever you call it. Summer is indubitably the best time to kick around a ball with a bunch of your homeys or rather, to go down to the pub and get plastered whilst cheering on the folk who get payed ridiculous sums to do it (properly).

Last summer Germany took over as world champions at the 20th FIFA World Cup in Brazil. This summer is the year for the women’s teams to shine during the 7th FIFA Women’s World Cup, which is being held here in Canada with Montreal among the 6 host cities. Now, the World Cup may not start until the 6th of June but I know a great way for you to get stoked on soccer in this city! Last Wednesday, May 13th, marked the kick off to the 2nd annual Pitchfest, a Montreal based festival dedicated to the sport and the culture of soccer.

The festival’s dedication to the love of the sport expresses itself throughout a number of artistic mediums. For example, this past Tuesday they hosted a highly anticipated vernissage for an exhibition at Station 16 Gallery (showing May 18-24) showcasing world renown artists, such as France native Meka and Montreal born Paul Labonté, and their personal expression of this love.
 If you are among the unfortunate ones who missed the vernissage, you are in luck, the heart of the festival is taking place this weekend at the Cinéma du Parc. With films hailing from Britain to Columbia, Pitchfest will surely have you itching to dig up your old cleats and hit the field.
