Hanging out with Eman El-Husseini

Eman El-Husseini to many is a comedian. She’s a talented, young woman working her way to the top in a hard and male dominated industry. But I know her as one if the first comedians who supported me in my new adventure of blogging and discovering comedy in Montreal and over the years has become a dear friend to me.
We may not have seen each other all the time or talked on the phone. But I knew that if I reached out to her, she would be there to answer my call. For this, she has always been on my good side and I know I’m not alone.
Forward 5 years and so much has changed. We have changed cities but have not lost our passion. Eman has grown to become the Queen of Comedy. I caught up with her this past Sunday at the Nubian Show. There is something to be said about comics who can make you laugh even though you’ve heard the joke many times. She is refined, sharp and ready for the big leagues.
We hadn’t seen each other in over a year so it was great to finally be hanging out before a show, like in the old days. She has all kinds of things going on. Podcast, Live Tapings, New York… is there anything she isn’t doing?
First the podcast. I know Eman always dabbled in politics and has a string voice when it comes to a woman’s rights and beliefs. This podcast gave her the medium needed to express herself and let others tell their story. That’s what I thought. The real answer is:
Going to New York just makes sense. It’s where so many talented comedians meet and work their asses off to take their careers to the next level. She said she knew it will be a lot of hard work but she was ready for it. Supported by her amazing wife Jessica Salomon, Eman is well on her way.
Eman: “New York is the Mecca of standup and I get to perform among the best in the industry. You get schooled and your ass kicked so hard in that city it’s tough but generous when you deserve it.”
I ask her what it’s like to date a comedian. As you may think that seeing your significant other all the time may be a downside to some but not her.
“I never thought I wanted to be with another comic. I always kept my personal life separate from my standup life. I don’t want comedy/my career to take over my life but of course all of my requirements about my ideal person were tossed in the garbage when I met my ideal person. Now I’m so head over heels in love it’s disgusting. So working together means more time together. I know so corny and gross, feel free to stop talking to me.”
Dude, keep talking. That’s real love people. I saw it, up close and personal. And it’s something to be celebrated when two people can come together and enjoy and respect every aspect of their partners life.
I also wondered what would she do if she didn’t do comedy. Would you still bartend? Would you be a teacher? I was curious. I was’nt even close.
If I can go back in time I would be a professional tennis player. Serena Venus and I would be BFFs.
To finish it off and in spirit of Katelynd Kuhar leaving the Mobtreal Comedy Corner, I asked her the mob question:
Eman: “I can’t be a flavoured vodka because I can’t stand those but I’d definitely be a Russian vodka. You can call me stoli.”
