JOHNNIE MCNAMARA WALKER’S INTERNATIONALLY CELEBRATED SOLO SHOW MAKES ITS MONTREAL DEBUT!
★★★★★
“Comic genius… an experience not to be missed!” The Irish Times
Johnnie McNamara Walker is thrilled to be making his Montreal Fringe Festival debut with his internationally-acclaimed solo show The Heterosexuals! First performed at the 2022 Edmonton Fringe, Johnnie has spent the last three years touring his hit show, wowing audiences and selling out houses in Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Dublin (Ireland), Rochester (NY), and Atlanta (Georgia). It received the Audience Favourite Award at Lavender Fest this June. Hot off those successes, The Heterosexuals returned to the Edmonton Fringe last summer for a completely sold-out run, where it was nominated for The SoHo Playhouse’s Fringe Encore Series. Most recently, the show made its Off-Broadway Debut at The SoHo Playhouse in March 2025.
The Heterosexuals is a deep dive into the shocking world of Heterosexuality. THEY WALK AMONG US! But where did they come from? And what do they think they’re wearing? Find out in this explosive work based on undercover research gathered by Walker while posing as one of their own! Combining elements of storytelling, satire, comedy, and deep personal humiliation, The Heterosexuals is here to spill the T on what The Queers think about The Straights.
“The conceit of The Heterosexuals is that I’m running a secret meeting where a 100% Queer audience is trying to determine, once and for all: what is to be done about those pesky Straights?” Walker explains. “Of course, the likelihood of such an audience actually attending the show is essentially nil, so while the Queer folks in the crowd are in on the joke, the Heteros in attendance get to ditch their identities for an hour and be complicit in their own roast.”
Johnnie McNamara Walker is a Toronto-based writer and performer whose previous solo show, Redheaded Stepchild, is available in print from Playwrights Canada Press. He is a founding member of BoylesqueTO, Canada’s premiere boylesque troupe, and has written and hosted dozens of shows for them, which have been performed across North America—including many performances at Montreal’s The Wiggle Room—and honoured at the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. In 2019, his play Shove It Down My Throat ran at Toronto’s Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, developed with the assistance of an Artist Residency with Playwrights Workshop Montreal. His short film Saturn Devours debuted at Montreal’s IMAGE+NATION festival and has since played at festivals across Canada and the US. It was nominated for Best Performance and Best Foreign Film at NewFilmmakers Los Angeles
