Aliya Kanani’s ‘Where You From, From?’ at OFF-JFL in Montreal
30 countries, 10 schools, 6 languages (okay, not totally fluently, but who’s counting?) …so, where is she from? Good question.
After a recent run of sold-out shows at the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Canada-based comedian, Aliya Kanani, is excited to bring her show home! Known for her playful and mischievous personality, Aliya has appeared on StandUp NBC-New York, SiriusXm’s Top Comic, CBC and Le Grand Gala Masculin at Dr. Mobilo Aquafest right here in Montreal!
Aliya takes you on a turbulent journey around the world with tales of fitting in, sticking out and standing up. Her captivating story is unique, yet relatable. Aliya’s pleasant nature, combined with her fiery spirit, leaves audiences feeling energized and uplifted.
How does one find a place of belonging in a place they don’t fit in? Using humor, Aliya learned not only how to adapt to any situation, but how to take up space in the ever-changing backdrop that was her life. Always the new kid in school, Aliya was certainly an easy target… until she learned the only way to really deal with a bully was to bully them back! By virtue of circumstance, she developed a thick skin and a quick wit.
From a young age, Aliya relocated with her family from one Canadian city to the next, and when they ran out of places to move… they went to Africa! This nomadic lifestyle gave her a taste for travel and adventure, one she couldn’t shake. So naturally, she became a flight attendant!
Traveling the world gave Aliya the chance to experience even more cultures and meet more strangers. Her curious nature meant she sometimes got herself into trouble, but somehow always managed to talk her way out of it. How? Usually by making people laugh… sometimes without even speaking their language!
After all her roaming, Aliya can’t figure out how to answer the basic question she’s asked everywhere she goes: ‘Where you from?’
“While her ‘otherness’ is the central theme of the conversation in Where You From, From?, the heart of Kanani’s show is in forming a ‘togetherness’ with the room and her audience…ensuring the audience always has plenty to laugh at and plenty to bond over.” – My Melbourne Arts
