Review: Force Majeure

Force Majeure (original title: Turist) is a Swedish drama written and directed by Ruben Östlund. The film revolves around a cliché looking family, going on a cliché looking vacation in the Alps. Early in the film,  the father is seen cowardly leaving his family behind, while narrowly escaping a controlled avalanche. Fortunately, not a single person was injured. Unfortunately, the mother is more shaken by his coward act than anything else.

The film then explores the idea of marriage, i.e. what is a good life partner? It takes a look at what society expects out of a man and it  makes you wonder how you would react, if faced with a similar situation.

The ambiance of the film is enough of a reason to spend money to go watch it in theatres. The sounds and gorgeous cinematography of the Alps pulls you into the film and its heavy climate fuelled by the family’s trauma.

However, surprisingly, one of the best elements of the film, is its sense of humour. I am fully aware of how I have made this film seem like a heavy drama, but it is actually incredibly well balanced with humour. I went from laughing incredulously at the pathetic attempt of the husband, who tries to gain sympathy from his wife by crying, to quietly sympathizing with the wife, emotionally torn by her husband,  who still puts effort in her relationship because of her children. Yes, the acting is terrific.

My night consisted of 3 things: wonder, anxiousness and laughter.

Great film, very well made, one of the best at FNC.
